About the Department (B.Tech.Bio-Tech)

The Department of Biotechnology was started in the year 2002, is offering B.Tech., Biotechnology course at UG level and DBT sponsored GAT-B for M.Tech., Biotechnology at PG level. A total of 13 teaching faculty members along with 5 lab technicians and two computer programmers are working in the Department. Among the staff member, ten staff members hold with Ph.D., and all other are having M.Tech., and M.Phil., degrees. Around 5 part-time and 4 full-time research scholars are pursuing their Ph.D., programme. The Departmental library has a collection of 832 books, 88 back volumes, 22 online journals (Science direct journals), 11 hard bound journals and 11 magazines. A significant improvement has been recorded in terms of student and staff activities in Biotechnology Departments. It revealed that a total of 16 final year B.Tech., students and five staff members have received their ‘Summer Research Fellowship’ from Indian Academy of Sciences (IASc), Bangalore and Indian National Science Academy (INSA), New Delhi and University Grand Commission (UGC) New Delhi so far. Similarly, so far 24 ‘Student Project Scheme’ were received from Tamil Nadu State council of Science and Technology (TNSCST), Chennai for which a total outlay of Rs.1,80,000/- was sanctioned. A total of six staff members were received ‘Young Scientist Award’ and ‘Summer Faculty Research Fellowship from TNSCST, Chennai and Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi, respectively for which the recipients were carried out a project work for a period of two months at reputed institutions such as IITs, IISc, IASc, University departments and other R&D centres. The Department has good publication profile and is funded by many funding agencies like DST, DBT, NTRF, AICTE, ICMR etc.,

Objective

To prepare students to meet the manpower requirements in the field of Biotechnology in rural and urban areas where there is ample scope for its diverse application.
